Former Indian opener Robin Uthappa has lauded the selectors for selecting Shubman Gill as the next Test captain of India. There was considerable discussion about who would succeed Rohit Sharma after he retired from Test cricket, and the selectors chose Gill.
Gill's maiden Test assignment will be the upcoming Test series against England starting from June 20 at Headingley. The Test series will kick off the WTC 2025-27 campaign for both teams as well.
Shubman Gill is coming off a brilliant IPL 2025 season. He scored 650 runs in the season and looks to be in good form. However, conditions in England will test Gill as it will test all the other Indian batters.

However, test. Speaking to Star Sports, Uthappa said that Gill's selection as Test captain might hold India in good stead in the future.
"You have got to give tops to that selection committee because they have gone with foresight. Shubman is just 24 or 25 right now. If he gets this right, then you can see him leading the Indian Test side for the next 10 years, the next decade, and that leaves Indian cricket in great hands because he is a high-quality bat," he said.
Uthappa also praised Shubman Gill for his captaincy with Gujarat Titans in the recently concluded IPL 2025. Gill led his side to the knockouts losing to Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator.
"We have seen his captaincy evolve from last year to this year just in the IPL, just the way he led the Gujarat Titans, the intensity with which he functioned, the decisions he made on the field, and the way he stood up for his teammates with the umpires or anything that happened on the field," Uthappa added further.
