CWI plea for Olympic qualification

Cricket West Indies, in a bid to play in the upcoming 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) for equal access and opportunity to participate in the event.

Cricket will make a return to the 2028 Olympics in the T20 format. Six teams will participate in the event across men's and women's categories. The game will be played in the T20I format. Cricket will make its first appearance in the Olympics since 1900.

Meanwhile, the West Indies, with their very proud history, have requested the ICC to be given equal opportunities to ensure participation in the mega event.

West Indies Fight For Olympic Qualification

In a letter to the ICC, Cricket West Indies urged that “the unique configuration of West Indies cricket be fairly accommodated in ongoing discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).” Meanwhile, the ICC is yet to decide the qualification process for the event.

“Cricket West Indies’ proposal comes in light of the current Olympic rules that would exclude West Indies Men and Women teams from Olympic participation," said the statement.

Chief Executive Officer of CWI, Chris Dehring, in his statement, said that the different countries in the Caribbean should be considered for selection for this event.

“All we are asking is that our individual nations’ exceptional Olympic legacy be considered in the conversation. The structure of West Indies cricket is unique— men and women teams representing 15 individual nations and territories, each with its own Olympic identity. We cannot let this once-in-a-generation opportunity for national development pass without creating a way for our countries to participate,” he added saying.

CWI Proposes Two Options To ICC For Qualification

Cricket West Indies further suggested to the ICC two options. First is the inter-Caribbean qualifying tournament, allowing the different countries of the Caribbean to fight for their selection in men's and women's categories. Second is a dedicated regional qualifying process, allowing every independent Caribbean nation to participate.
